Sod Webworm & Armyworm Control in Sarasota — Stop the Overnight Damage

Caterpillars are the fastest lawn pest to cause visible damage. Unlike chinch bugs (slow, gradual) or grubs (underground, damage builds over weeks), caterpillar damage is above-ground and immediate. A heavy fall armyworm outbreak can strip noticeable sections of a Sarasota lawn in 48 hours.

Sarasota Lawn Care identifies the species, treats fast, and stops active feeding within 24 hours. Call (941) 297-2606 now.

Sod Webworm vs Armyworm

Sod webworm. Small larvae (under 3/4 inch), greenish-gray with dark spots. Hide in silken tubes in thatch during day, feed at night. Adult moths small, tan, fly zigzag at dusk. Damage pattern: patchy, irregular, ragged blade tips.

Tropical sod webworm. Subtropical cousin, common in Sarasota. Similar biology but slightly more destructive and stays active later into fall.

Fall armyworm. Larger (up to 1.5 inches), green to dark green with stripes and an inverted-Y on the head. Travels in groups. Causes dramatic overnight damage. The species behind most of the severe October damage we treat in Sarasota.

Why Fall Is the Danger Zone

All three peak in August–November. Fall armyworm is September–October dominant. Sarasota’s mild winters occasionally stretch activity into late November, which doesn’t happen in colder parts of the state.

Treating at the first ragged patches keeps the outbreak localized. Waiting means a larger infestation and more visible damage.

The Sarasota Barrier Island Consideration

Siesta Key, Lido, and Longboat lawns — already stressed by salt exposure — are slower to recover from caterpillar damage than mainland lawns. For Island properties, preventive program coverage (our 7-step) is the strong recommendation because the tolerance for lost blade tissue is lower on salt-stressed turf.

What Treatment Looks Like

Confirm species first (chinch bug and fungus damage can look similar at first glance). Once confirmed, broadcast application targets the thatch layer where caterpillars hide during daytime. Modern caterpillar-specific chemistry — spinosad, Bt, or bifenthrin — breaks the population within 24 hours.

Follow-up at 5–7 days catches secondary egg-laying cohorts.

What It Costs, and How Fast

Sarasota caterpillar treatment starts in the low-to-mid hundreds for a typical single-family lawn. Our Lawn Care 7-Step program covers fall caterpillars and is the usual recommendation for homes that have been hit before.

Active overnight damage gets same-day or next-day scheduling. Call (941) 297-2606 with your address.

We recently engaged this team for our pest control needs. Adam provided an extensive overview of his services and quoted a vastly more competitive rate. After two service calls we're not only impressed by Adam's expertise but the level of service is absolutely astonishing (we're from New York and that's not easily done). They deserve 10 stars and should be everyone's choice for pest care.

My fiancé and I live in Parrish — she, I, and our two dogs were attacked by Africanized killer bees. We almost lost one of our dogs and needed to remediate the situation immediately. I contacted Adam and he was quick to respond. The team came out within 24 hours, assessed the situation and executed a successful plan to eliminate the entire hive. Thank you Adam and the entire team!

Adam was amazing. He came out the same day for a very last minute call. Not only did he spend time understanding our problem and explaining everything in detail, he also came back twice to make sure we caught the mice. We appreciated his attention so much we had him come back out to spray for ants too. Excellent service — we'll definitely continue to use this company for all of our pest needs.

Currently renting and have been using Adam throughout our lease. Adam is very responsive and thorough. He has come out to inspect the status of things before deciding what's best for our house. Appreciate his quick response and coming out when I reach out. We'd use Adam for future pest control needs when we move out of our lease! Highly recommend.

Absolutely shocked at the service these folks provide! Called on a Sunday morning and an actual person answered and scheduled our appointment for the next day. Came on time, took care of the issue, recommended simple care we can do on our own, and never tried to sell me a monthly service. Even went to a neighbor's house to analyze their situation without an appointment. The kind of service we've all forgotten about. Highly Recommend!!!

I can't say enough good things about this team! The technician showed up right on time, was incredibly professional, and took the time to explain everything. He didn't just treat the obvious spots — he inspected every corner of my home and pointed out small issues I never would have noticed. Adam gave honest, clear answers, no upselling. After the treatment I noticed results almost immediately.

These folks are terrific. They listen to my concerns and do a thorough job. No rushing to move on to the next customer here. They just finished. Were here over an hour and took the time to explain everything they did. And I'm on a yearly program not a one time visit. I'm very happy with Adam and his team.

Questions We Hear Every Day

Quick answers from our SWFL pest pros.

How do I know it's webworms or armyworms and not chinch bugs?

Chinch bug damage is blades dying in place — dry, crunchy, yellow-then-brown. Caterpillar damage is blades being chewed off or stripped — ragged feeding edges, patches that look mowed too short. Part the thatch; caterpillars and small pellet-like droppings (frass) will be visible. Armyworm damage also advances overnight, which is a strong differential tell.

What's the difference between sod webworm and armyworm?

Sod webworm larvae: under 3/4 inch, greenish-gray, hide in silken tubes in thatch. Tropical sod webworm (common in Sarasota): similar biology, slightly more destructive. Fall armyworm: larger larvae up to 1.5 inches, green/dark with stripes, travel in groups ('armies'), strip lawn sections overnight. Treatment is similar for all three.

When is caterpillar season in Sarasota?

Heaviest pressure August through November. Fall armyworm outbreaks peak September–October. Sod webworms start as early as May but peak in the same fall window. Sarasota's mild winters occasionally allow late-November activity that doesn't happen further north.

Will my St. Augustine recover after caterpillar damage?

Usually yes. Caterpillars eat blades, not stolons or roots. Once treatment stops the feeding, St. Augustine and Bahia regrow from stolons within 2–4 weeks. Heavily damaged sections may need plugging if stolon density is too low to recover — uncommon but possible on very severe armyworm outbreaks.

How fast can you get to my Sarasota lawn?

Same-day or next-day for active caterpillar damage. Our Sarasota routes cover downtown, Laurel Park, Gillespie Park, Arlington Park, Southgate, Palmer Ranch, and border areas with Lakewood Ranch.

Do Siesta Key and Lido lawns get caterpillars too?

Yes. Island St. Augustine is stressed by salt exposure and therefore often more severely damaged by caterpillar feeding because recovery is slower. Island lawns benefit from preventive program coverage more than mainland lawns — the tolerance for lost blade tissue is simply lower.

What does caterpillar treatment cost in Sarasota?

One-time treatment for a typical Sarasota single-family lawn starts in the low-to-mid hundreds depending on lot size. Our Lawn Care 7-Step program covers fall caterpillars as preventive work. Free inspection first.

Is caterpillar treatment safe for pets and kids?

Yes. Modern products (spinosad, bifenthrin, Bt) dry in 1–2 hours. Keep pets off until fully dry. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is available on request for pet-sensitive or organic-preference households — no mammalian toxicity.
