The Insects That Actually Kill Sarasota Lawns

How do I tell chinch bug damage from drought stress?
They look almost identical — yellowing to straw-colored patches in sunny areas, spreading outward. Chinch bug damage doesn't bounce back after watering; drought does. Pull back the grass at the edge of a patch — if you see small black-and-white insects crawling at the thatch line, it's chinch bugs. If blades are limp but still green at the base, it's drought. My lawn has brown patches with chewed grass blades. What is it?
Probably sod webworm. They're night-feeding caterpillars that chew grass blades — you'll see tips that look cut off or notched. Damage is cosmetic rather than structural and usually recovers once the insect is treated. Peak pressure in Sarasota is late summer through fall.

What's eating patches of grass overnight?
Armyworm is the usual culprit when large areas disappear fast. They're voracious — a heavy infestation can take out 10 to 15 feet of lawn in a couple of nights. Treatment needs to happen within days of noticing damage.

I have little volcano-looking dirt piles in the lawn. Fire ants?
Maybe, but it's more often mole crickets in Bahia areas. Mole crickets tunnel just below the surface and push up small soil mounds. They're a peak-season pest in SWFL and cause both physical damage and root disruption. Fire ant mounds are larger, more conical, and don't have tunnel tracks.

Can I just use the home improvement store insecticide on my lawn?
You can, but identifying the insect correctly is most of the battle — chinch bug, sod webworm, armyworm, and grubs all need different products applied at different rates. Getting it wrong wastes money and loses you weeks while the damage spreads. We ID the insect before applying anything.

How often does my Sarasota lawn need pest treatment?
